Grab a few pencils for Pencil Day!The pencil was invented in 1895 according to ButlerWebs, but there are a multitude of different answers and various other dates listed on the World Wide Web. Cool Quiz states that N. J. Conte successfully produced pencils in 1795. The Pencil Pages declares that the first ancestor of our modern pencil was in 1565 when a piece of graphite inserted into a wood shaft was produced. Another explanation is from A Lifetime of Color which claims that the first pencils were pieces of reeds with tiny brushes of hair that were used by the Egyptians to write on papyrus. ©Pencil clip art created by Bobbie Peachey.
