You've used a search engine to find a page of clip art, but there are no terms of usage, no email address or link to the home page. Here's how to find the home page and start your search for an email address or terms of usage page.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 5 minutes
Here's How:
- Look at the the site address in your browser-- Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer, etc.
- Notice that the address starts with http and probably ends with htm or html and has several slashes in the address.
- Place your mouse cursor at the end of the site address in your browser.
- Delete from the end of the address through the first slash you come to.
- Click enter to go to the new page.
- Carefully check this page of the site for an email address or the terms of usage statement.
- If you do not find the information on this page, again go to the browser and delete the ending of the address up through the next slash.
- Repeat this process until you find the base address-- the home page. The home page of the example above is: http://turing.csc.smith.edu/
Tips:
- The URL used for example does not lead to a page that clearly identifies the clip art. By careful searching you will find a name and email so you could ask for the terms regarding the clip art pages.
- This method of locating the home page from within a Web site on a page that has no links to any other page may not work with every address.
- It's possible that you may not locate the home page, but will eventually come to that Web sites Internet Service Provide.
