Please follow the terms of usage required for each Web site. These terms vary greatly from clip art site to clip art site.

Let's face it, all Web pages and Web sites are not created equal. We have all surfed into a site, stayed a few seconds, then left to go on our merry way. Other sites have caught our attention and we stay to admire and surf their site. What makes the difference? What makes a winning Web site?

A Web page winner, the site that stands out from the crowd, has background, clip art, text color, music, and content intricately meshed together to form the total web site. Each component of the Web page blends in harmony to achieve a pleasing backdrop for the contents of the page and site.

Creating a Winning Web Site

  • A good Web site is organized and has a consistent layout. The more pages you have, the more important it is to have navigation aids, such as menu buttons, that will allow your visitors to navigate your site easily. Many times I have surfed into a site that looks very interesting, yet navigation was impossible because of multiple frames, nonexistent navigational buttons, or hard-to-find menus buttons. Placing text or clip art menu buttons in the same place on each page is a great navigational aid.
  • Keep slow loading animation and clip art to a minimum and keep the images very specific to your Web page and Web site. Remember that your pages will load much slower for a visitor than for you. You have them in your cache, but visitors must sit and wait for them to load.
  • Flashers, (animated clip art, buttons, balls, lines, and arrows that rotate and flash), are eye-catching, but most winning Web sites do not have them. This same rule is true of brightly colored blinking text. If visitors are on your page over 15 seconds the blinking and/or flashing can become very irritating and distracting.
  • Ensure that your text is very readable. You have something to say and your visitors would very much like to read it, but can't if your text disappears into your background. This same rule should be applied to your menu buttons and the title of your page. Make sure that they are highly visible, but that the title and the menu buttons do not intrude or overpower your content and Web page.
  • Frames! It isn't likely that we will all agree on what makes an outstanding page, but I feel that anything over three frames is too much. Frames can be used very effectively as a menu area along the left hand side, the top, and the right hand side of a page if a bit of discretion is used. I have surfed a few framed sites that work well, but most framed sites do not.

Did you know there is a color standard for links?

Blue is for links you haven't visited and red is for links you have already seen. This makes it easy for your visitors to know exactly what link to choose as they wander back and forth on your site. If you must change the link colors because they clash with your page color scheme, change them to a different shade of blue or red. Use any color of blue, from very light blue to very dark blue. Red could be changed from a bright red to pale pink, or to a deep purple.
