There are roughly more than 350 species of birds that are referred to as parrots. They include macaws, Amazons, lorikeets, lovebirds, cockatoos, African greys and many others.

Parrots are some of the most colorful birds in the world. Their bright vivid colors make people smile... bright vivid colors are happy colors.

The African grey parrot is the most accomplished user of human speech in the animal world. It is not unusual for an African Grey parrot to learn up to 100 words and phrases, many of which he will use correctly in context to communicate wants, needs and observations.

Parrot speech is commonly regarded as brainless mimicry. But studies over the past 30 years continue to show that parrots engage in much more than mere mimicry. Our avian friends can solve certain linguistic processing tasks as well as any four to six year-old child can. Parrots appear to grasp concepts like "same" and "different", "bigger" and "smaller" and know numbers. Perhaps most interestingly, they can combine labels and phrases in novel ways.

A parrot whose cries of alarm helped save the life of a choking girl in Denver, Colorado has been hailed a hero and awarded the Red Cross's Animal Lifesaver Award in Denver, Colorado, USA.

As baby Hannah was choking on her breakfast, Willie the Parrot saw that she was turning blue so he caused a commotion by flapping his wings noisily while squawking, 'Mama! Baby!'

Megan Howard, Hannah's mother heard his cries and was able to save Hannah's life by applying the Heimlich manuver.
