August 7 is National Lighthouse Day. It was on this day in 1789 that Congress first approved an Act for the establishment and support of lighthouses. Two hundred years later, Congress made August 7th the official day in celebration of the history and purpose of lighthouses across America.
For centuries lighthouses have served as a beacon of light, guiding ships safely to a harbor in fog or in a storm. To celebrate National Lighthouse Day, visit a local lighthouse near you or donate to a lighthouse preservation society.
