Feathers are one of the most prominent features of a bird's appearance, and feathers are unique to birds. Every bird has feathers and everything that has feathers is a bird.

Feathers evolved from reptilian scales, and in fact birds still possess scales in the lower parts of their legs and feet.

Feathers do many jobs for birds. Soft down keeps them warm, wing feathers allow flight and tail feathers are used for steering.

In many species, feathers attract the opposite sex, and there is something about feathers that attract humans to a certain kind of bird as well.

Peacock feathers are some of the most beautiful and colorful objects in nature. Throughout the centuries they have been used in many ornamental ways. But do you know what causes the colors in the feathers?

Unlike human hair, which is colored due to pigment, peacock feathers are colored structurally. This means that they get most of their color from light reflection. This is why depending on the angle seen from and the light intensity, the colors slightly change in their appearance.

The bird with the least feathers is the Ruby-throated Hummingbird who has only 940 feathers in total while the bird with the most feathers is the Whistling Swan which can have as many as 25,000 feathers during winter.

The longest feathers in the world belong to an ornamental chicken bread in Japan in 1972, this specimen had tail feathers 34.75ft long. The longest feathers of a wild bird belong to the Crested Argus Pheasant which commonly reach lengths 5.7ft.

  • If you keep your feathers well oiled the water of criticism will run off as water from a duck's back.
