While on mega doses of allergy medication due to a reaction to a spider bite, I had the opportunity to stay home during the day, curl up on the couch, and watch day time sitcoms. For those who may never have seen one, a sitcom is a situation comedy program on television.

Opening Scene
The opening scene was set in a normal living room with normal furniture, including a couch. A woman was sitting on the couch reading a normal sized book. The door opened and a normal looking man walked in, glanced at the woman and said, "Hello".

Laughter broke out from an unseen audience.

I looked at the scene again. Everything seemed normal. Both the man and woman were completely dressed. The man was not dragging a dead dragon or anything else into the room. I found myself wondering what bit of humor I had missed.

What Did I Miss?
I watched closely to see what would happen next. The woman put down the book, smiled at the man and said, "Hi".

Wild laughter exploded from the unseen audience.

My mouth dropped open and I moved closer to the television set trying to find something in the scene that called for spontaneous wild laughter.

Who The Heck Is Bob?
The man walked into the room, closed the door, sat down on the couch by the woman and said in a mournful drawl, "Have you seen Bob today?"

Screams of laughter, giggles, and the sound of clapping came from the unseen audience.

Wow, This Is Really Wild Stuff!

Ahhh! I finally figured it out. This is a COMEDY program and everything about it and everything in it IS funny and humorous. The producer of the show is using canned laughter to let the audience know when it's appropriate to laugh.

What a Great Idea!
You don't need to watch the program or even listen to it. You don't have to decide if you've seen or heard anything funny because the producer of this comedy show will tell you when and where and how long to laugh.
