Answer to Question 5

By Bobbie Peachey, About.com

Answer to Question 5:

  • Why do I see a colored square around transparent clip art when I print it out?

  • Transparent gifs (images) are for use on Web pages only. The transparent background is created when the gif is drawn and created. A color is chosen for the background around the piece of clip art that has NOT been used in coloring the clip art. If you download transparent clip art and print it on white paper image would NOT be transparent and you would see a square of color surrounding the clip art image.

It's a bit complicated to try to describe a transparent image or gif, and you might say that it is just a bit of Web magic that transparent clip art does work on Web pages.
